Why Choose Tobacco Caye Marine Station?

Tobacco Caye Marine Station is a study abroad centre based at Tobacco Caye which is a tiny island situated alongside the Belize Barrier Reef. The station is a marine based education and research centre offering immersive learning for study abroad groups. We host groups from Belize and around the world from universities, colleges and schools. We have been established in Belize since 2009 and host around 500 study abroad students annually. Each study abroad program is fully tailored to the individual group and their focus. Our mission is to offer immersive learning opportunities in the marine environment to study abroad groups worldwide. Tobacco Caye is situated in the protected area of the South Water Caye Marine Reserve which features coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangrove lagoons. This makes Tobacco Caye an excellent place for both study abroad students and for anyone interested in our internship opportunities. When snorkelling in the protected areas groups can focus on fish identification, coral monitoring with the Coral Watch project or simply observe the teeming reefs. The station is working towards the idea of becoming a centre for conservation by recycling organic waste to produce compost for our vegetable garden, running solely from solar power and harvesting our own rainwater and filtering it into drinking water. The island has no mains electricity or water so everything has to run off the grid.
